About Gilded Age Doyennes

Sorcery and CeceliaWe (Kjirstin and Bernadette) decided, a while back, that we wanted to try storytelling by writing letters in character to each other. One example of this sort of writing, sometimes called The Letter Game, can be found in the novel Sorcery and Cecelia (pictured here). We thought a fun way to do this would be by posting to a blog so that we have a common access point, as well as a way to archive what we’ve written, and to share it (if anyone else is interested).

Imogen and Elizabeth write in 1885, at the heart of the Gilded Age. It’s been 20 years since the end of the Civil War, and business in the United States is booming. Both of them have reaped the benefits of the wealth being spread around in this time. However, neither has been married, which at that time was considered a sad thing, once a woman left her twenties. Contemplating spinsterhood, however, will not occupy our heroines for long, as they become involved in their respective adventures.

We’re working hard to do our research and make this as true to the time as possible–please be generous if we make mistakes. After all, this is mostly just an exercise in entertaining ourselves with storytelling.

Thanks for coming! We’d love to hear feedback on any of the letters that you’ve read–just put a note as a comment.
